Unfortunately today's match epitomizes what I hate about the all-too-often style of MLS soccer. 27 fouls, 9 cards, stalling, diving, way too much whining, and sloppy play.
This was the first time watching the Sounders when I felt like they belonged right where they are—in the MLS. I know the way LA was playing forced us into an ugly slow-tempo match, but we need to force our opponents to play our style. In this respect the Galaxy did exactly what they wanted to do and came away with a point.
There's no doubt the ref lost control of the match. This is evident in the number of fouls and amount of dissent. The more the players think they can get away with it the more they'll continue to do it. I think the Sounders need to play above this. Having 3 red cards in the first 8 matches is not a good start. We are going to get a reputation that I don't think we want.
Even thought they were up one man for a good portion of the match, LA played not to lose, which is a horrible thing to watch. But once again, they got a point on the road. And although the Sounders played tough today, they didn't play smart.
LeToux played with a great work-rate for his first start up front. He got his first MLS goal because he hustled and got himself into the right spot. I think he deserves another start.
Also, I know there's a lot talk online about the penalty on Jaqua at the end of the first half. I wasn't able to make the match today but I did watch it on TV where they showed a replay a few times. I actually think the ref made the right call. Jaqua was barely touched and went down way to easy.
What do you think of the Sounders play? Their attitudes? Was it ALL the refs fault? Did you like LeToux's play?

I agree for the most part. L.A.'s style of play forced us to attack in a much more patient manner than we use to playing, but I disagree that they needed to rise above it. Well, I disagree in the sense that I don't think it is always possible to rise above.
Referees exist for a reason. They represent the Game and enforce the laws of play, but they also take responsibility for the well being and safety of the players, and it is in that respect that the officials on Sunday were grossly negligent.
They are there to allow the players to play the game. If the players feel that they have to also be responsible for protecting themselves, too, things get out of hand. They end up responding physically to perceived attacks and slights. With proper officiating -- refs calling fouls and verbally telling players where the boundaries of a safe challenge and a dangerous one are -- that isn't an issue.
As for LeToux, he's a much better forward than mid-fielder. In mid-field, his possession is too loose for our offense. In the attacking third, his feel for the back of the net comes through. But who are you going to sit so Seba can play? Montero? Jaqua?
I think he has to return to a supporting role.
